GPRTU Increases Transport Fares by 20% Following Meeting with Transport Ministry
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced a 20% increase in transport fares following discussions with the transport ministry. This decision comes after a meeting where representatives from both parties deliberated on the current economic situation and its impact on the transport sector.
Mr. Ahotor James, the GPRTU Mim branch secretary, shed light on this decision during an interview , According to Mr James, the directive to increase fares by 20% was communicated from the national level down to the district branches.
Drivers are being instructed to adhere strictly to the approved fare increment and avoid charging fares beyond the stipulated 20%. Mr. James emphasized that any unauthorized fare hikes would not be tolerated, and there is a dedicated task force in place to monitor and penalize drivers who flout these regulations.
Furthermore, Mr. James urged the public to cooperate with drivers and pay the new fares as per the 20% increment. He highlighted the challenges faced by the transport sector, including rising fuel costs and maintenance expenses, as factors contributing to the fare adjustment.
