Save Offin Bridge from Collapse, Dunkwahene Pleads with Government

The Dunkwahene, Nana Obeng Nuakoh III, has called on the Ministry of Roads and Highways to consider fixing the deplorable nature of Dunkwa-on-Offin bridge and save it from total collapse.

He said the bridge is currently posing danger to lives, as the metals have become rusty while some have been stolen, thereby exposing drivers and commuters in the area to danger.

Nana Obeng Nuakoh noted in an interview that the bridge have developed potholes and therefore not passing as a thoroughfare along the short stretch.

The bridge was built in November 1956 and commissioned by Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Prime Minister of the Gold Coast and Sir Charles Noble Arden-Clarke, Governor of the Gold Coast on January 25, 1957, 40 days before the Gold Coast became independent Ghana.

Nana Nuakoh said the Offin Bridge served as the main link from Kumasi to parts of the Western and Central regions, but currently weak, looking at the heavy vehicular traffic.

As a result, the chief has stressed the urgent need to rehabilitate it to avoid untoward incidents and fatal accident.

Nana Obeng Nuakoh further mentioned the deplorable condition of a bridge situated between the Dunkwa Government Hospital and a police station, which causes flooding whenever it rains.

The chief also expressed worry over the deterioration of the Obuasi-Dunkwa road, which stretch was awarded on contract about four years ago.

According to him, the stretch has recorded a number of fatal accidents on weekly basis because of the current deplorable state.

He described work on the road as shoddy because major parts of it had developed potholes and called on the government to prevail on the contractor to put the road in a better shape to avoid the preventable accidents.
