Election 2024: NPP Assures Peaceful Transition if Defeated

Amid mounting concerns from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding the potential for a smooth transfer of power, Interior Minister Henry Quartey has reaffirmed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) unwavering commitment to upholding democracy.

Hon. Quartey’s declaration, made during a press conference in Accra on May 15th, sought to allay fears raised by recent remarks from President Akufo-Addo hinting at reluctance towards conceding defeat.

Addressing the media, Hon. Quartey underscored the NPP’s stance on ensuring a peaceful electoral process, emphasizing that regardless of the election outcome, the party would adhere to democratic norms and facilitate a seamless transition if necessary.

He firmly stated, “Perish the thought, if they decide to give their mandate to somebody, we will hand over peacefully and walk away,” highlighting the party’s readiness to accept the will of the people.

Hon. Quartey issued a stern warning against any acts of violence before, during, or after the upcoming elections, regardless of political affiliation.

Citing recent incidents during voter registration, he emphasized that the law would be rigorously enforced to hold perpetrators accountable, ensuring justice without bias or political vendetta.

In his closing remarks, Quartey reiterated the NPP’s commitment to the democratic process, pledging to uphold the rule of law and maintain a peaceful environment conducive to free and fair elections.
