The former Milan and Napoli coach believes the continent should have fewer slots, stating, “I think Africa has a lot of places. It’s not easy to say, but I think five is a lot. I don’t know the reality of African football, but if they give them five places, it’s a lot.”
Gattuso’s remarks come as African teams are vying for a spot in the 2026 World Cup, with Nigeria and Dr.Congo in contention for the Inter Continental playoffs.
However, Africa currently has 9 slots, an increase from the five from previous years.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe has long advocated for more slots, citing Africa’s growing football prowess.
Gattuso’s comments contrast with Motsepe’s push for increased representation, fueling debate about Africa’s World Cup allocation.
The Italian coach’s understanding of African football has been questioned by many, with some arguing that his comments are misinformed.
Many have pointed to Morocco’s semi final finish in the 2022 World Cup as an improvement in performances by African country.
The Atlas Lions bettered Ghana’s record of finishing in the quarter finals of the World Cup, going a step further.
